Week 6 : Tuesday, 28/09/21
- A self representation in the form of a drawing / painting/ sculpture / design. It is a visual depiction of the self.
- A self - portrait artwork represents the designer/artist - in other words, hew he sees himself, what he's feeling, and how he wants to be seen by others. It's not necessarily about creating a realistic image of yourself ; instead, it's often an exercise in self-exploration.

Video 1.1 Self Portrait by Rainforest Art Project (08/09/21)
- For this assignment, We were assigned to create and explore about our self or simply represent our self through our design in order to finish this project. Before starting this project, I decided to learn even deeper about self exploration by watching several videos from YouTube about self exploration, and I landed to this video created by Rainforest Art Project about self portrait.
- I found this video interesting because I can figure out how to explore ourself or simply represent ourself through our own design. By watching this video, I also discovered that lots of artist and designer came across with different style and characteristic to produce their own self portrait.

- In 1845, Gustave Courbet surprised the art world with his self-portrait titled "The Desperate Man". Courbet is considered one of the modern artists where the tradition of the past were thrown aside in the spirit of experimentation and a new willingness to express complex idea and emotions.

- The French impressionist movement later in the 19th century introduced new ways of using color and tone in paintings. There was a sudden change in the look of self-portraits as the impressionist began to apply small touches of pure color rather than using broader brushstrokes. Later pioneers of modern art would include Vincent Van Gogh With his painfully revealing self portrait

- And also Pablo Picasso who seemed to be very creative to stretch the limits of imagination and innovation when applying his character to canvas.
- Idea Exploration :
- To ensure my self about my personality as well as my behavior, I decided to start my own poll on my instagram account so that my closest relations and friends could help me figure out about myself a little bit more.

- By making this little survey, I've collected many responses related to myself and my personality that I found incredibly valuable to help me complete this project. Most of them replied that I'm such a soft person with bright personality yet quite stubborn.
Highlight point about my personality from the responses :
- Soft and Sensitive Person
- Bright personality
- Loud and Noisy types of person
- Stubborn and Mischievous
- Some bad behaviors
- Design References :
- To begin with, I decided to find some pictures from Pinterest that I think similar with my personality, It can be from the color, brightness, composition, or even the element from these images.

- I found similarities from these two pictures with myself, especially for the colors used in here. The soft yet sensitive colors from these images really suitable to express and represent how soft and sensitive I am as a person.
- Somehow, I felt like these two pictures also gave me the sense of bright and loud judging by the number of elements used within these two references.

- I also planned to show the audience about my bad behaviors using these references that I found from Pinterest as well. By using symbols inspired from these images. These images that I picked from Pinterest would extremely narrated my bad behaviors to the viewers.
PROGRESSION :
- Progression (first attempt and before feedback) :

- Here are my First Progression, I tried to involve many components and elements to express how messy and complex I am, however it is turned to be very messy and ruined the whole picture. I also received several feedback from Dr Charles related to my current progression.
Notes and Feedback from Dr. Charles :
- He suggested me to eliminate the "Loud" and the "Yahoo!" Texts
- He also told me that the "Angel Ring" is unnecessary, so
it'll be much better if I remove it from the picture.
- The expression kinda seductive, so he suggested me to adjust the
facial expression.
- Instead of using the instagram as the background, you can
convert it as if you're inside of it.
- He also recommended me to fill the bandages with texts that
represent my pains.

- Based on the given feedback from Dr. Charles, I revised several parts from the previous sketch to reduce the unnecessary elements from this picture, I also tried to fix and adjust the facial expression of my character, and try to adjust the composition (instagram template) as instructed.

- As I said earlier, I'm going to apply the soft color and transform it to be a little bit more sensitive to represent how soft yet sensitive person I am.

I also did a several improvements, such as adjusting the shades
and enhance the lighting to make it or adding the sense of
dramatic from this picture.

- Title :
- Through this picture, I want to express how good I am disguising my whole bad behaviors with my Bright and Expressive personality. I may not be able to tell this little story to everyone directly so I narrated them within this picture. I am so grateful to possess this well behave (I guess) and bright personality, for me this is such a great advantage for me to establish good impressions in every people's mind.
- However, I won't be able to deny it the fact that I'm also a sinner. It is hard for me even painful to keep my well behave and this personality in front of people. So for the concept of this picture is all about how I want to tell people that I'm also a bad person (not that bad), so that's why I applied Instagram Template to narrate how bad I am via social media.
- Design Elements and Principle Elements
- Unity :
- Harmony : The used of harmony colors from my design
- Emphasis : The outline and blur (for the background) create an emphasis by outshining my character than the background.
- Repetitive : The bandages and Cigarettes are using the sense of Repetition
- Space : The white (instagram template) as well as the background left lots of negative space.
- Word and Image : The use of word for the username and caption (instagram)
- Symbol : The objects or elements at the back of my character.
- Balance (asymmetrical) : Balance between the symbols
- Symbols
- Alcohol Can : I tried to reflect my drinking habit.
- Cigarettes : Brand new cigarettes, it shows how often I spent my money for those things.
- Cigarette (Broken) : How I insanely try to leave these sort of behaviors.
- Match : How I run out of energy in order to leave in the way of behaving
- Stress : How stressed and depressed I am currently.

Here are some evidences about principle elements that I
applied for this project. I also had a chance to made my own
symbol and used it through this picture (Fig 3.11). I also
utilized the principle of word and imaged by using the Insta's
captions and hashtags.

FEEDBACK :
Week 6 - 9 :
- General Feedback :
- In order to improve our designs, Dr Charles happened to give us several feedbacks. It's included some suggestions, recommendations, as well as advice to let us evolve our design by ourselves. I'm also received several feedbacks from him and changed some of the elements from my picture as he suggested.
- Specific Feedback :

REFLECTION :
- Experience :
- Throughout this project, I've learned numerous things about self portrait and how do we express ourselves through a picture. Not only that, from this class we also had a chance to identify ourselves even deeper and narrate it by completing this project. The class itself is a huge thumbs up, the lecturer (Dr. Charles) is such an inspiration for us and everything from his class undoubtedly valuable for students.
- Observation :
- I observed many things from this class and this projects, I even also watched several videos from YouTube to learn about self-portrait even deeper. I found that every people or artist has their different style in the way of expressing themselves.
- Finding :
- I found this project is very interesting. We experienced something more than just an art and design. We (some of us) enable to discover themselves a little bit more in order to finish this project.
