LECTURE

Week 10 : Exercise ( Introduction to After Effect )

  • Adobe After Effects:

Figure 1.1 After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing. After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation. This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

Figure 1.2 Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. you can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

  • Compositing Layers in Photoshop :

Figure 1.3 Pre Compositing in Adobe Photoshop

Basically Photoshop is a platform to compositing the layers. All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in after effects.

  • Compositing Layers in Adobe After Effects :

Figure 1.4 Pre Compositing In Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application. Basically we can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into this application. All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as photoshop and illustrator. After effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.

INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL

For this exercise, students were assigned to explore and develop themselves by creating a short animation from the given picture through Adobe After Effects. This assignments will be submitted before week 10 and need to be reflected via student's E-Portofolio blog.

PROJECT 4 ( AFTER EFFECT EXERCISE )

We were asked to manipulate several elements from the given file from google classroom and follow the instruction from Mr Martin's video. We would also need to discover few tools from the Adobe After Effects and construct our own animation.

 Instruction :

- Download the composition from Google Drive
- Import the given file and picture (W9_ANIMATE.psd) into Adobe After Effects
- Create a compositing setting 1080 px (width) x 1920 px (height) with 15 second duration
- Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position, Scale, and Mask.
- Render output : Quictime (H.264)
- Upload your exercise into your Youtube channel.
- Update your progress and video to E-Portoflio blog

Figure 2.1 The Given File (01/11/21)

I started this project by exploring the provided tools from Adobe After effects while watching the demonstration video made by our facilitator (Mr Martin). I planned to create a very smooth motion graphic for the short video by moving and utilizing the whole objects from the picture.

Figure 2.2 Progression #1 (01/11/21)

As I mentioned earlier, I need to utilized all of the elements to make an acceptable short animation, so that I played around with the available objects by duplicating and experimenting its position, scale, as well as mask.

Figure 2.3 Masking Progress (01/11/21)

Figure 2.4 Masking Progress (01/11/21)

From those pictures, I tried to construct a very smooth transition by developing the masking tool. It helps me a lot to create a very neat alternate within the images. I'm struggled while applying the "Easy Ease" tool owing to the fact that you can't barely redo your work.

Final Result :

- Shark : Position and Scale changes.
- Fencer : Position and Scale changes.
- Typewriter : Masking
- Recorder : Masking

FEEDBACK

Week 9 - 10 :

  • General Feedback :
    • Mr Martin demonstrated us a very quick tutorial video before executing your work through Adobe After Effects. He also presented us our senior's works that would be a great reference. Pinterest could also be a great place to explore and discover new ideas to enhance our skill as well as ability before finishing our final project for this semester.

REFLECTION

Experience : Throughout this project, I developed many things especially for my animation ability. I had a chance to create or produce a motion graphic design by using Adobe After Effects. The class was also great and memorable for me, the facilitators (both Mr Fauzi and Mr Martin) are very cooperative and friendly. Honestly, I have been waiting to enter as well as to learn this kind of class (animation) and it was so fascinating when they said we would learn how to use After Effects properly.

Observation : I observed that Adobe After Effects is more complex and difficult application despite to the fact that it has so many tools and windows. Although it was quite frustrating to learn the whole application at the beginning, but I still managed to produce an "acceptable" art work for this project.

Finding : I found that playing around with the Position, Scale, and Mask was quite amusing for me. It was not as hard as I thought earlier about animation. I was having so much fun while planning the movement and the motion for this short animation particularly for the masking part. This application would be a great choice for those who intend to enter animation or videography.
