LECTURE

Week 5 : Exercise 5 (Poster Design Development)

Poster :

Poster is a coventional medium to convey information to the target audience. Poster can be cluttered or straightforward. If too many colors, fonts, images or animated figures are involved in conveying information or message, it confuses the viewers.

Figure 1.0 Convey information to the target (25/09/21)

The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense. When you start brainstorming for your poster design idea, you need to ask yourself why you're making this poster :

- Is it a poster of brand awareness ?
- Is it an advertising poster ?
- is it an Public Service Announcement (PSA) poster ?

What is Public Service Announcement (PSA) ?

A public service announcement or PSA is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

Things to do :
  • Research about your topic :
    • Study and gather all related information about your topic.
    • Write summary about your topic
    • highlight the key points of your summary
    • Define the title
    • Define the slogan
    • Define the details
    • Define the Call For Action
The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense

  • Define your concept :
    • Create a section for each contents (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
    • Sketch your mock up poster
    • Fill in with details

  • Start to develop your design projects :
    • Draft the digital poster based on your sketch
    • Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design
    • Apply color, typography, textures & effects
    • Finalize your design with color correction

Creative posters where meaningful information comes wrapped with striking pictures and images.

Figure 1.4 Example for PSA (25/09/21)

Creative poster is made up of four key features :

  • TITLE : The total is a descriptive indicator of the contents of the poster, and it should not exceed two lines of text.

Figure 1.5 Example for Title (25/09/21)

  • TEXT : The text should clearly describe the message clearly but nor overloaded

Figure 1.6 Text
  • GRAPHIC (PHOTO) : Graphics must appear in context with the main text. Choose high-resolution images (300 dpi or higher)

Figure 1.7 Graphic

  • WHITE SPACE : White space creates "breathing room" within poster, which helps viewers avoid feeling overwhelmed by the information being presented.

Figure 1.8 White Space

  • LAYOUT : There are many design layout. For our project, we suggest graphics-centered layout.

Figure 1.9 Layout

  • FLOW: Flow coordinates with how reader's eyes move around the different sections of poster. Maintain Hierarchy While displaying your message.

Figure 1.10 Flow

  • COLOUR : Color draws reader's gaze and define the different sections of your poster.

Figure 1.11 Color

Lastly, will my design create an impact ?

- What is the purpose of my poster design ?
- Am I clearly depicting the idea of my poster design ?
- Does my poster convey its message meaningfully and beautifully ?

Week 6 : Exercise 6 (Poster Design Execution)

What is the meaning of Public Service Announcement ? :
  • Public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, social issue.

Once you've narrowed down your scope, you can start to do :

- Research about your topic
- Define your concept
- Start to develop your design projects

Things to do :

  • Research about your topic :
We need to create or reflect about "mental health affected by COVID19" through our poster, we also need to submit our summary about the picture and submit it via classroom to mr Martin. He assigned us to submit the idea such as references, title, slogan, details, and call for an action from the given slides.

Figure 6.1

  • Define your concept :
- Create a section for each contents (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
- Sketch your mock up poster
- Fill in with details

Decide on Idea, and approach :
How the designer EVOKES viewer's feeling, deliver strong impression ?
    • Shock Value - Brutal
    • Provocative  - Upsetting
    • Humor          - Sarcastic
    • Sensitive.     - Heart Warming
    • Artistic.         - Subtle

Figure 6.2 Example for Shock Value - Brutal

Figure 6.3 Example for Provocative - Upsetting

We also discussed about several things related to the concept our future poster, not only that, he also asked us to a determine some of these photo (which one is the more ......) to ensure all of the students could understand the current project. for example :

Figure 6.4 Which one is more PROVOKING?

Figure 6.5 Which one is more PROVOKING?

Subsequently, he also asked the students to describe several pictures and narrate it to Mr Martin about what do you know about the picture that you see. He wants all the students to comprehend every materials from this subject.

  • Mental Health PSA

  • Start to develop your design projects
    • Visualize your idea & concept into sketches.
    • Draft the digital poster based on your sketch.
    • Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
    • Apply color, typography, textures & effects
    • Finalize your design with color correction

Week 7 : Exercise 7 (Color Theory)

  • Color Theory : Both the science and art of using color. It explains how humans perceive color; and the messages colors communicate artistically and emotionally.

Figure 7.1 Color Theory

  • RGB (Addictive Color Mixing Model) : Created by mixing red, green, and blue light sources of various intensities
    • TVs, screens and projectors use red, green, and blue as their primary colors.

Figure 7.2 RGB

  • CMYK (Subtractive Color Mixing Model) : Created by the subtraction of light. The CMYK color system used for printing.

Figure 7.3 CMYK (Subtractive Color Mixing Model)

  • Hue : Is the most basic of color terms and denotes an object's color.

  • Shade : Is a hue to which black has been added.
    • For example, red + black = Burgundy

Figure 7.4 Hue and Shade

  • Tint : Is a hue to which white has been added.
    • For example, red + white = Pink

  • Tone : Is a color to which black and white (or grey) has been added.

Figure 7.5 Tone and Tint

  • Color Harmony : The arrangement of the colors in design in the most attractive and effective way for users' perception

  • Monochromatic : Monochromatic  is hard to make mistake and create the distasteful color scheme.

Figure 7.6 Monochromatic Color

  • Analogous : 3 colors located right next to each other on the color wheel. Analogous usually one of the three colors predominates.

Figure 7.8 Example for Analogous

  • Complementary : Are opposite in the color wheel. This scheme is opposite to analogous and monochromatic since it aims to produce high contrast. Complementary colors make imagery pop, but overusing them can get tiresome.

Figure 7.10 Example for Complementary

  • Split-Complementary : Involves the use of three colors. Start with one color, find its complement and then use the two colors on either side of it.

Figure 7.11 Split-Complementary

  • Triadic : Evenly spaced around the color wheel and tend to be very bright and dynamic. Using triadic color scheme creates visual contrast and harmony simultaneously.

Figure 7.13 Example for Triadic

  • The Psychology of Color : Color have an extraordinary ability to provoke specific emotions for each individual and to attract people's attention and harmony simultaneously. While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, some effects have universal meaning.

Figure 7.14 The Psychology of Color

  • Warm Colors : Warm colors often evoke feelings of happiness, optimism, or energy. However, yellow, red, and orange can also have an attention grabbing effect and signal danger or make you take action (think stop sign, hazard warnings, and barrier tape)

Figure 7.15 Examples for Warm Color

  • Cool Colors : Cool colors are usually calming and soothing but can also express sadness. Purple is often used to help spark creativity as it's a mixture of blue (calm) and red (intense)

Figure 7.16 Example for Cool Color

Figure 7.16 Example for Cool Color (purple)

  • Black : Is often used sparingly -- such as for text -- but it works quite well as a primary color element (like for backgrounds). Black adds an air of sophistication and elegance, and also mystery, though with much bolder confidence.

Figure 7.17 Example for Black

  • White : As primary, white gives off an impression of clean, virtuous, health. White pairs well with just about anything, making it ideal as secondary. White pairs well with just about anything, making it ideal as a secondary color.

INSTRUCTIONS

For this project, we need to reflect and demonstrate our ability to research on "mental health affected by covid 19" to complete this project. Mr Martin also assigned us to find and elaborate even deeper about this subject through our E-Portofolio blog.

PROJECT 2B (POSTER RESEARCH)

We've been given several instructions as well as question related to our lesson or subject about "mental health affected by COVID19".  Here are some the instructions and the given question from Mr Martin :

Instruction :

Figure 2.1 Instruction

1) How are you, as an individual affected by COVID19?? physically or mentally?? are they related??

2) Research online : "young adult/student's mental health affected by COVID19", save or bookmark the articles that you are interested. Make summary of each articles.

3) View posters from on Pinterest, limited to posters designed with IMAGES/PHOTOS and texts, bypass posters designed with GRAPHICS and texts. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected poster?

4) View posters on Pinterest, limited to PSA posters only. PIN the posters that you like about the selected posters?

5) Post your finding on Blog under Project 2.

1) How are you, as an individual affected by COVID19?? physically or mentally?? are they related??:

  • As a student, COVID19 really affected my college life in Taylor's University. I was born in Indonesia and it is really hard for me to take the online classes from my university. It makes me feel depressed occasionally with a lot of tasks and exercises from my university and see how my social life somehow seems to be limited by this pandemic currently. I'm tired mentally and physically to experience this online college life, it is not because I'm ungrateful, but I'm tired to caged in my house for 2 whole years.

2) Research online : "young adult/student's mental health affected by COVID19", save or bookmark the articles that you are interested. Make summary of each articles :

Figure 2.2 Article from National Library of Medicine (26/09/21)

  • National Library of Medicine : From this article, I learned that young adult/student's mental health worse psychological by the pandemic of COVID19, especially for those who were not mandated to relocate. This article also says that they examined that people experiences related to self-reported worry, grief, loneliness, and depressive, generalized anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Figure 2.3 Article from National Library of Medicine (26/09/21)

  • National Library of Medicine : The uncertainty of pandemic COVID19 also may result in problematic sleep that can causes several health issues. From this article, I learned that by the unprecedented or stress time can also even more detrimental for the young adults with pre-existing mental health conditions. This article also explained us that young adults experienced high rates of sleeping problems during the first two month (April to May 2021). It says that depressive and anxiety symptoms appear to be predictors of sleep quality regardless of any pre-existing diagnosis. Furthermorehigh levels of PTSD symptoms and COVID-19-related worry were associated with young adults' poor sleep.

3) View posters from on Pinterest, limited to posters designed with IMAGES/PHOTOS and texts, bypass posters designed with GRAPHICS and texts. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected poster? :

Figure 2.5 Poster from Pinterest (26/09/21)

  • This is the first picture that I found from Pinterest (click here to get the link). This picture contained less GRAPHIC DESIGN, but it represents the used of repetition form to fill the whole frame. Occasionally, less is better or more and I agree with that. I adore the use of blue color in here as well as the title with white color, the composition is also where the designer left so many white space for this image.

Figure 2.6 Poster from Pinterest (26/09/21)

  • For this picture, I also got it from Pinterest (click here to get the link). I found this picture is interesting is because the image as well as the text. I love how the creator filled the whole frame with the tiger picture, sometimes, we don't even need to use extreme graphical design to attain the proper poster. Also I love the way the artist chose prominent colors/contrast for the title or the messages.

Figure 2.7 Poster from Pinterest (26/09/21)

  • Here is the last poster that I picked from Pinterest (click here to get the link), I found this picture interesting because of its simplicity, this picture is basic yet amazing for me.

4) View posters on Pinterest, limited to PSA posters only. PIN the posters that you like about the selected posters?

Figure 2.8 PSA From Pinterest (26/09/21)

  • This is the first PSA poster that I chose from Pinterest (click here to get the link). I honestly impressed with this picture, especially for the image that they chose to create this poster. I love how they convey a message through this image. The designer also used a very basic yet amazing idea font type to create the title. They also picked yellow color to highlight the most important things from this picture. Furthermore, I love the composition of this poster.

Figure 2.9 PSA From Pinterest (26/09/21)

  • Similar with the first picture, I also like the composition of this poster that I found from Pinterest (click here to get the link), the reason why I love this composition is because the artist chose to combine several design elements (trash objects) and put it together inside of the pearl. This poster also looks amazing because of the background colors that are similar with the color of the real ocean.

PROJECT 2B (POSTER DESIGN)

Sketches

Figure 2.11 First and Second Sketches (11/10/21)

  • For the sketch, I decided to make a couple of sketches with different style in form of exploration so that I will be able to find suitable composition for my concept (insomnia). For the first sketch, because of its concept (covidsomnia) I chose to use ripped paper effect to express the sense of someone that struggling to sleep  who overwhelmed by the pandemic of COVID 19.

  • For the second sketch, I wanted to create a simple poster with a great impact to the audience, I tried to reduce the number of elements from this poster so that the viewers would receive limited object yet with the major / important information.

Figure 2.12 Title Sketch (11/10/21)

  • I've constructed few different ideas for the preliminary designs before execute it through Adobe Photoshop. It is also my aim to create dissimilar titles in order to find a very suitable layout for my future poster design. Unfortunately, neither from this arrangement I chose for my poster prototype.

Figure 2.13 Slogan Sketch (11/10/21)

  • Sadly, I did not perform very well for the slogan plan owing to the fact that I found it was frustrating and hard to compose different layout for this part, fortunately I've managed to finish the slogan for the poster with another different composition.

Progression Poster 1 (Before Feedback)

Figure 2.14 Picture from Pinterest

  • For the first poster I found this picture from Pinterest (click here to get the link). This photo is very powerful for me to represent the sense of insomnia or covidsomnia. I decided to edit and adjust this image using photoshop, I also tried to explore several tools from photoshop to evolve the quality for my future poster.

Figure 2.15 Progression #1 and #2 (11/10/21)

Figure 2.16 Progression #3 and #4 (11/10/21)

  • The chosen colors which are Green and Purple are intentional to phrase the sense of depression which caused by pandemic Covid -19. It is also deliver how people with covidsomnia experienced.

Progression Poster 2 (Before Feedback)

Figure x.17 Picture from Pinterest

  • Likewise the previous progress, I also found this picture from Pinterest (click here to get the link). I found this picture kind of boring and not so convincing, so I decided to improve some elements from this image. First of all, I changed the font and the typography that is looked sort of outdated so I changed all of the font and also the colors to make it even more interesting.

Figure 2.18Progression #1 and #2

Figure 2.19 Progression #3 and #4

  • This poster incredibly different from the previous pre design poster. The color as well as the composition insanely nonidentical. For this one, I settled up this poster with less elemental than the foregoing work. I planed to attract people's eye using bright yellow color on the title in order to convey every individuals about this particular topic (COVIDSOMNIA)

Progression (After Feedback)

Figure 2.20 Before and After (11/10/21)

  • All students obtained some responses for their current work, including my self. He informed me that the final composition indeed looked engaging as well as promising, nevertheless, he also suggested me to re arrange the thickness from my "details" in order to improve the readability from its text.

FINAL POSTER

Figure 2.20 Final result

  • Design Approach : Direct
    • Through this poster design, I planed to convey people and socializing this topic (COVIDSOMNIA) even more further. The majority of individuals who suffered this mental issues had no idea if they were infected. So that I intended to let people realize about this existing mental health problem. With bright colors used for this work, Most people would likely to pay their attention towards this poster.

  • Hidden Messages :
    • Purple and Green : I've ran several exploration about color psychology, and nearly all websites labeled purple as a depression color along with dark greens

  • Font :
    • Title : Helvetica Neue (Condensed Black), 155 Pt
    • Slogan : Helvetica Neue (Medium Italic), 22 Pt
    • Details : Helvetica Neue (Medium Italic), 18 Pt

FEEDBACK

Week 6 :

  • General Feedback :
    • Mr Martin managed to give responses as well as feedbacks to many students who attended the class. He also taught us about upcoming lessons (self - titled)

  • Specific Feedback :
    • The concept of my future poster, including title, slogan, and details are convincing and acceptable for this project, furthermore, he reminded me and ensure me to find another reference that relate to my topic (sleep issues)

Week 7 :

  • General Feedback :
    • Individual Learning Week

  • Specific Feedback :
    • Individual Learning Week

Week 8 :

  • General Feedback :
    • The majority of students who presented, revealed their design poster in order to receive another feedbacks to improve their future poster design.

  • Specific Feedback :
    • All students obtained some responses for their current work, including my self. He informed me that the final composition indeed looked engaging as well as promising, nevertheless, he also suggested me to re arrange the thickness from my "details" in order to improve the readability from its text.

REFLECTION

Experience : Throughout this project, I learned several important things for us as a design student. We learned how impactful our design is as well as how to express or reflect our messages through a picture. Mr Martin also told us to read various articles to understand more about the given subject (mental health affected by COVID19).

Observation : I observed that designer has an important role to communicate with the audience through their art works. We also had a chance to learn and identify even deeper about mental health issues that affected by the covid-19 pandemic.

Finding : I found many things that is related to the covid 19, not only that, students are also given the opportunity to express and deliver their experience about mental health problem that they discovered for this project.
