Week 3 : Tuesday, 07/09/21

Harmony and Unity
  • Harmony :
    • Involves the selection of elements that share a common trait
    • Harmony becomes monotony without variety
    • The sense that all of the elements of your design fit together (theme, style, or mood)

Figure 1.1 Harmony

  • Unity :
    • Refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your design (colors, shapes, or materials) to pull the look together
    • Occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and oneness, creating a theme.
    • Unity and Harmony, each play distinct roles in the way we experience design.

Figure 1.2 Unity

  • Scale and Proportion :
    • Both are design elements that have to do with size
    • Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in design or artwork.
    • Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relation to the other parts of the same objects

  • Scale :
    • Refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure.
    • Can be determined in two ways (actual measurement and visual estimate)
    • For the example, architectural drawings and scale models.
    • Also used to specify or illustrate details based and relative sizes of objects

Figure 1.3 Scale

  • Proportion
    • the relationships of two or more elements in a composition
    • Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exist between the elements (with respect to size or quantity)
    • the effective use of proportion in design often result in harmony and unity.

Symbol, Word, and Image
  • Symbol :
    • A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else.
    • Can provide or convey information.

  • Pictorial Symbols  :
    • Image-related and simplified pictures.
    • Pictorial Symbol also very useful for the educational materials.

Figure 1.5 Pictorial Symbol

  • Abstract Symbols :
    • Abstract symbols can look like the objects that they represent but have less details.
    • Many brands use abstract symbol to form their logo.

Figure 1.6 Abstract Symbol

  • Arbritrary Symbols :
    • Have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.
    • They symbol is invented with the meaning constructed (many are based on geometric shapes and colors).
    • We have to learn arbitrary symbol.

Figure 1.7 Arbritrary Symbol.

  • Word and Image :
    • imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Users and viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design.
    • It is important to use suitable or relevant images when designing.
    • Choosing the right words to pair with the imaginary is of high importance (deepen the meaning of design).
    • Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance.

INSTRUCTION

VISUAL RESEARCH

Unity : References from Pinterest

From what I've watched and learned from the given lecture videos, Unity is more about the difference that share the same common traits, For instance involving the same colors or analogous colors on your work that create the sense of oneness. Not only that, repetition also can be applied throughout your work (colors, shapes, or materials) to pull the look together.

As we can see from these pictures, They involved and shared the same common traits to unite all of their different elements together (the colors, shapes, and materials) it is also applied the use of repetition to make each elements to look even more similar to each others.

Figure 2.0 Visual Research from Pinterest

I took few elements from these pictures (that I just learned) which I have applied to my design which include the repetition elements and the combination color that I found from color hunt.

Harmony : Reference from Pinterest

harmony involves the selection of the elements that are share the same common traits, they are usually varied and connected to each other which seems to form a theme, Harmony become monotonous without variety, so variety is crucial in harmony. Even with different objects or element, Harmony can still look suitable and complement each other even though they use different elements or there are variations in them.

Figure 3.0 Research from Pinterest

Similar with the previous principle (unity) I decided to apply several elements (most of them are colors and shapes) to my work. I found this picture interesting is because of its simplicity and I chose to follow the same path as this picture to represent the sense of simplicity through my picture.

PRACTICAL

Unity : I tried involving several elements and colors that share the same common traits (analogous colors) to create the feel of oneness. I chose these pictures as my reference and started to create my own design.

Figure 2.1 Example For Unity

I started by choosing several color template from Color Hunt to improve and maximize the quality of my design. I tried to use this analogous colors to represent the feel of oneness from my picture. but however, I ended up using the purple colors instead.

Figure 2.2 Color Template

Figure 2.3 Color Template

At first, I tried to minimize the using of my elements on my design, but soon It seemed a little bit monotony without variety. So I decided to add a little bit elements to maximize the variety on my design. I also repeated several elements (trees, clouds, and mountain).

Figure 2.4 Progression 1

I also added some elements to the picture in order to represent the repetition on my pictures by repeating several objects such as the trees, mountains, and the birds to show the sense of repetition.

FINAL SUBMISSION

Final Result (Unity)

Harmony : Regarding to MIB, we were assigned to create 2 different designs, so I chose harmony as my second choice and decided to find some inspiration from the internet as well as from Pinterest. I found these two interesting pictures and I chose to recreate them with my own style.

Figure 3.1 Reference

Figure 3.2 Reference

From what I know and the given video from Mr Charles, variety reduce the amount of monotony on your design, so I decided to involve a lot of elements and colors to create the sense of variety. In terms of colors, I chose 3 or more different colors that connected and fit together (theme, color, and shape).

Figure 3.3 Progression

I also put the video, so that the lecturer could see and watch the progression of mine.

Video 1.2 Progression

I received several feedback from Dr Charles involving the composition or the framing of my work, he emphasized that the picture could be better with wider framing, so I adjusted the frame as well as composition to make it bigger than the original version.

FINAL SUBMISSION :

Final Submission (Harmony)

FEEDBACK

  • General Feedback :
    • Mr Charles emphasized that unity and harmony are two different things, he told us that, even if it is sound similar to us, those principals are clearly dissimilar.

  • Specific Feedback :
    • Mr Charles told me that he likes my work, there are several things that I should concern about such as the irregularity from my unity (figure 2.4) and to change the composition of my harmony work (figure 3.4), he told me that then harmony worked on there and it could be even better to enlarge the composition or the framing.

REFLECTION

  • Experience :
    • Throughout this exercises, we experienced so many things about Harmony and Unity especially how we (design students) apply and reflect the harmony and unity into our work properly. The lecture videos also very clear and understandable for all students. Our lecturer, Dr Charles also gave each of us (students) very clear feedback in order to let student figure out or thrive by themselves

  • Observation :
    • As a student, we observed many things throughout this exercise. We found out that even though harmony and unity looks and sounds similar for us, they both play distinct roles in the way we experience it. We also had a chance to learn even deeper about another principles, such as symbol and image (and word).
