LECTURE

Week 7 : Tuesday, 05/10/21

Sense of Place :

  • The Important of Observation :

    • Now, how does the designer "know" what imagery or content to include in the design? We understand that the client informs the designer of the purpose of the project BUT, when it comes to visual ideas, how do designer work?
    • This is where observation comes in. Being an observant means to be attentive to your surroundings, to say attention to the details and to be analytical about them.
    • For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surrounding, and such.

    • To enhance your understanding about observation, here is a video that will help you to improve your powers of observation (click here to get the link

  Video 1.1 Observation (Video)

    • Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting.
    • If you notice, the video also mentioned the word senses. Our senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyze, and even plan what we want to do.
    • Observation is important to designers as it enables them to see "problems", as well as getting ideas for solutions to those problems.

  • Sense of Place :

    • As shown in the example of the Island Bazaar, we can get the hint of an island life, the cool breeze of the air, the warmth of the sun all through careful observation and documentation of the designer's surroundings.
    • Besides that, you will also observe that suitable design principles are applied to create effective visuals in those instagram feeds of Island Bazaar.

Figure 1.3 Island Bazaar (Instagram)

Figure 1.4 Island Bazaar (Feeds)

- We can discover about cropping
- We explore about proportion and composition
- We can observe the emphasis

    • Now think about the place you're in now, or a place you had spent some times at previously, or, a place that had created a lasting memory in you.
    • How do you express your sense of that place?
    • Start by documenting your observations -- photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

Figure 1. Great example to document your observation (mind map)

    • Island Bazaar's instagram posts is just an example of how a sense of place can be expressed -- photography. There are other mediums you can explore, such as collage, illustration (manual/digital), scale model, the possibilities out there are endless.

VISUAL RESEARCH :

  • Visual Research :

Figure 2.1 Illustration by kristydraws.com

Figure 2.2 Perspective by kristydraws.com

I found this amazing artworks from the internet (click here to get the link). This artist indirectly taught me about how important perspective is. By maximizing its perspective, an image would look more appealing as well as convincing even even if the picture using unusual or surreal style.

I also had a chance to discover how to express a different expression for a different moment, This is a little detail that will improve our work and please the audience through a picture. Sometimes, we don't actually need a facial expression to convey the viewers about a certain moment, but we could utilize another objects around in the picture (lighting, gesture, etc.)

Figure 2.5 Artwork by Kristydraws.com

These pictures also showed me that lighting could create or change an image to be more dramatic and believable. I found these illustrations interesting owing to the fact the author used photoshop to digitalize all of these artworks. I couldn't even do the lighting properly in my tablet so I'm super impressed to hear that the artist using Adobe to complete all the designs.

  • Idea Exploration :

Figure 2.6 Toy Story 3

When I saw Kristy's drawings earlier, all of a sudden I remembered playing this game when I was adolescent. This game held many memories for me and it brings me a little nostalgic when doing this research. I recalled playing this game with my cousins and incredibly happy entertaining myself with this game until very late.

Figure 2.8 Wild West illustration from Pinterest

So I did a little bit analysis about Wild West from the Pinterest as well as the internet. I found this concept is captivating and insanely eccentric (unique). I've never heard any of these concept lately and I think this kind of concept is a little outdated, so I decided bring this idea back to complete my second project.

Afterwards, I did another research a little deeper about Wild West, from the original structure, texture, tradition, and even behavior. I want to construct something similar with wild west but in modern era where we can effortlessly find it.

  • Progression :

Figure 2.11 First attempt using Perspective Tool (30/10/21)

To begin with, I tried the perspective tool provided by Adobe Illustrator to enhance my ability using this application, it took forever to adjust the tool (maybe because I wasn't too cooperative) and quite complicated. Nevertheless, I could easily adapt to this particular tool and I was using it throughout this progress.

I  realized that Adobe Illustrator is a very versatile application for the beginners likewise me, and from now on, I'll using this application to complete all my tasks and exercises. I thought it ill be super complex to produce a illustration in here, however, I'm insanely impressed with this application and effortlessly finish my work.

Figure 2.12 Progression (30/10/21)

Here are some of my progressions, Honestly it was quite fun to produce this artwork. I played around with the objects (inspired by Fig.2.1) as well as the details. It took forever to create a crazy details using Adobe Illustrator, I've spent approximately 4 - 5 hours only to create several elements such as (scratch textures, rubbishes, papers, block structures, etc.).

Figure 2.14 Untrimmed Picture (22/10/21)

I just want to let the viewers now about this untrimmed picture, I found this (untrimmed) very interesting and gave me different sensation while looking at this.

Figure 2.13 Details  (22/10/21)

*Please take a look to the details

As I mentioned earlier, I spent most of my times to finish the details, I made an extreme details in order to give a different impress for the audience. This happened to improve the quality of my picture as well as despite to the fact that I was having fun while creating this image.

  • Animation Progress

Figure 2.14 Pre Animated Borders

Before closing this project, I decided to give this picture a little bit further execution to express how joyful I am while working on this picture. I made 25 borders to create the flying paper effect and took probably 3 hours on working.

Figure 2.15 Animation Progress

Here is the progression that I've documented, It's not a lot but I respect my self to finish all of this so far, Originally, I wan to create this paper effect animation using Adobe After Effect, but I just jumped to it for less than a weekend so I don't want to risk my work for this project by doing the after effect.

Figure 2.16

I ended up utilizing 25 frames to complete the motion graphic design, I knew it was not 100% yet but I ran out my times to ameliorate as well as re create it using Adobe Illustrator.

  • Final :

Figure 2.17 Final Result #1 and #2 - JPEG and GIF (22/10/21)

  • Title : Empty.

  • Description :

This picture described an empty and emptiness. I  want my audience to feel a similar emptiness to what I've been experiencing lately. I thought this picture was enough to define my solitude, but my friends reflect something else in this picture, which is empty. I hope I can deliver this message of empty to all of my audience who see this image.

FEEDBACK :

Week 8 - 10 :

  • General Feedback :
    • Some students who attended the class received several responses about their work from Dr. Charles. Although we experienced independent learning week as well as public holiday, but the facilitator managed to give us more than enough feedback for our current project.

  • Specific Feedback :
    • I managed to approach Dr Charles and received feedback to improve my work, he said that my original artwork (the one before this) looked interesting and quite captivating, he said that the messages that I tried to convey is understandable.

REFLECTION :

    • Throughout this project, I had so much fun while working on it. I struggled for a while but I still managed to finish this project. Mr Vinod is a great lecturer, he helped me again and again although I approached him for so many times.
