LECTURE
Visual Analysis :
- Is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
- In its strictest definition - a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
- Yet the purpose of visual analysis can also recognize the choices that a designer made in creating the designer made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.
- Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret the images, whether in a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.
- As citizens of the 21st century, we are constantly confronted with visual media. Practicing visual analysis sharpens critical judgement skills and helps people seek out answer instead of passively receiving information.
How does visual analysis work? :
- Phase 1 : Observation
- Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately In your own words, Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
- The observation phase is about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
- Phase 2 : Analysis
- Analysis requires you to think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations.
- Think about how the specific visual elements that you've identified combine together to create a whole, and what effect that whole has on the viewer.
- How your eye is ed through the work and why? Apply the Design Principles knowledge you have learnt throughout these weeks.
- Phase 3 : Interpretation
- In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
- What is the meaning of the design? what was the purpose for it to be created?
INSTRUCTION
MOVIE NARRATIVE :
A human (Hector) and his daughter (Lucie) arrived in the amusement
park. Due to the theme park's low safety regulations, Hector was
compelled to close it down. To protect the secret and prevent him from
shutting the amusement park, Francis, the vampire, and manager, has no
choice but to convert Hector into a monster. As a result, a
parent must be prepared to be separated from his daughter (Lucie) and
confined at the amusement park as both a worker and an
entertainer.
Figure 1.7 Steven was Reflected as "Human Vice"
This story is set against a backdrop of human nature and greed. For example, this film reflects Steven's (attractive
vampire) xenophobia, in which he is afraid of monsters other
than vampires and regards them as inferior and disgusting. Furthermore,
he (Steven) and all vampires, with the exception of Francis and
Gretchen, believe that monsters other than vampires are lower class,
reflecting human racism. Steven is also depicted as a cunning vampire, as evidenced by the way
he manipulates the other characters in this film for his own gain. He is
also described as a man who has no qualms about abusing women and
children.
We can also take morals that will help us in our daily
lives. After the death of Lucie's mother, Hector regrets being a bad
father and distances himself from her, and sends her to boarding school,
just as he did for Lucie. This film also depicts how Hector matured and evolved into a better guy than previously, how his fixation drove him to
close the Halloween theme park without knowing what was really going on
inside, and how, in the end, he defended the place he considered a
second home by himself.
VISUAL ANALYSIS :
Figure 1.1 Preview from "Zombiellenium Artbook" by Arhur de Pins
- Observation :
To give the spectator a gloomy or ominous feeling, this film used
predominantly dark hues (charcoal, harbor gray, abalone, and dark
brown). This sample gives the audience the impression that they
are in the grave by using a first-person perspective. The
(imperfect) frame was also made by utilizing the grave's
inside.
The variances in the shape of each character make this image
more intriguing and stand out here, despite the use of colors
that may be a little bit blend. As previously said, this image
can talk and connect well with the viewer, owing to the
utilization of excellent posture and expression by each figure
in the picture.Overall, it's a simple yet powerful illustration,
and viewers will quickly get the story behind it.
- Analysis :
This picture is made up of asymmetrical balance, which
we can see from its composition. The emphasis in this
artwork may also be found in a red rose on its way to the
audience, which should be the primary focus of attention in
this image due to the red color's superior contrast to
the rest. The flower is close to the skeleton's hand, drawing
our attention to him and the other characters. A sense of
movement can also be found in the shape of the rope,
which draws the viewer in closer to the character and all
around the scene.
Additionally, by using a deeper hue to generate attention in the
intended location, a feeling of framing was effectively
provided around the inside of the graveyard (the players). We may also
refer to it as a leading line because it has aided the artist
in emphasizing the primary item or figure. The black border
(grave) and the tree behind the people (Figure 1.4) gave the spectator
a feeling of depth while also allowing other elements, such as
the foreground and background, to grow.
Furthermore, while the characters had a range/variation of
proportions and scales in order to differentiate all of
the players in the image, the usage of black in the clothes generated
another design principle: repetition. The total picture has a
sense of togetherness, owing to the characters' repeated color
clothes, which helps to make the picture appear even more
united. Because of the overall arrangement and colors that seem
harmonious even when mixed with additional element colors, this
picture may still be harmonized.
- Interpretation :
Zombillenium is a satirical French-Belgian film directed by Arthur
de Pins that satirizes human avarice. Workers at Zombielenium,
namely at the Halloween theme park, were dissatisfied and
frustrated. All creatures whose souls have been possessed by demons,
not only zombies, vampires, and werewolves, are tired of this task,
bored of amusing humans with their greed, selfishness, and
consumptive nature.
After delving into the plot of the zombillenium film, it's clear
that the protagonists in this poster are saying their ultimate
farewell to bad human nature (Steven, maybe). This image
represents their desire to bury human vices and reflects on the
rose as their final token of affection. After getting rid of these
negative behaviors, a cheerful look and a straight face also
indicate no regret. There should be no regrets
expressed in order to bury the bad things that happened in the
past. Happy expressions can also mean joy at the prospect of
starting a new life.
A crimson rose, which also presented as the
emphasis from this picture, may also narrate
a respect, appreciation for those (negative
behavior) who have improved us by addressing our prior faults.
Roses can also symbolize a feeling of affection for our bad
habits, as they can be interpreted as a declaration of love and
affection. Two bats may also represent death or "letting go of the
old," which might mean letting rid of our negative
characteristics. This image also communicates to the audience
how the characters in this image let go of or buried the awful
things that transpired in the Zombillenium movie, and it teaches
the audience the importance of letting go of something that
continues to pain us..

DESIGN :
- References and Inspiration
Figure 2.1 and 2.2 References and Inspirations
I have to admit that it's a shame I'd never heard of this artist
before. Frank Frazetta's art is breathtaking, and it has inspired me
throughout this project. Mr. Charles was the one who first introduced
me to Frank Frazetta while giving me feedback on my final project
(Visual Analysis). He told me that his (Frank's) artworks would be
appropriate for my current project and would aid me in increasing the
emotionality of my image.
Figure 2.3 and 2.3 References and Inspirations
Frank Frazetta's artwork was always able to convey his emotions to the
audience. I was personally moved by the emotions elicited by his
pictures and work; they are so powerful that I was able to feel and
experience the character in his art without first conducting research
on the subject.
- Sketch and Progression :
Figure 3.1 and 3.2 Sketch #1 and #2
Here are some of my sketches before receiving a feedback from Dr
Charles. At First, I intend to create a fine art picture using this
sketch and I personally like these sketches. However, My facilitator (Dr
Charles) told me that the sketches wasn't strong enough to mention about
my statement during the class. That was the time when Dr Charles
introduced me to a very talented artist called Frank Frazetta. I admired
every single and piece of his artwork.
Figure 3.3 and 3.4 Sketches (New) #1 and #2
We can see from these sketches that I was able to convey strong emotion
more effectively than in the previous sketch. In these sketches, I was
able to convey to my audience my character's dominance. My friends and
Dr. Charles liked my concept and idea for this project, but the anatomy
and perspective of the characters made me completely frustrated and
defeated. Even after I colored my picture, I made a huge mistake.
- Progression :
Figure 4.1 Progression After Feedback
Due to its complexity, I spent about three days working on this
image. It was aggravating for me to color this picture. Because I
was inspired by Frank Frazetta's work, I wanted every part of my
picture to have insane details, which is why I spent half of the
week making sure the texture and detail met my expectations for this
project.
However, I was not satisfied with my work, and neither was Dr.
Charles. This picture imbalance and confusion for my audience was a
complete disaster. He appreciated my efforts, but the work was not
up to par at the time, particularly in terms of the body; everything
was wrong.
Figure 4.2 New Composition
I can't deny that Dr. Charles' comments about my work had a mental
impact on me. When I heard that feedback, I became too emotional and
gave up. My progress seemed completely erroneous and unworthy. I felt
like my efforts were futile at the time, and I wanted to give up.
However, after receiving feedback from Dr. Charles, I attempted to
correct my work as soon as possible. I tried every option and explored
my limitations in order to fine-tune my image until I came across my
old work. I chose to combine my previous work (lion) with my current,
project.
He gave me a positive impression of this project. He claimed that this
work was more productive than the previous one. The lion (position) is
excellent because it is in the middle of the other lions. He advised
me to adjust the opacity and colors because it appeared to blend at
the time. I was overjoyed to learn that, and I realized that I still
have the chance to improve my image and meet Dr. Charles'
expectations.
Figure 4.3 Additional Frame
I also attempted to create a frame around my photograph. This image
gives me a more dramatic sense. As I mentioned earlier, this photo has
a dramatic yet intense feel to it; we can see that the lion was upset
to see the other lions dead. That emotional component is required to
improve this image in order for me to convey and communicate with my
audience.
Figure 4.4 Animation
Figure 4.5 First Attempt Animation
Finally, I decided to create my own little animation for this image
using mental canvas, which has recently been used by my classmates. This
application appealed to me because it allowed us to create our own
animation as well as 3D animation more easily than the other
application. This application also assisted me in improving my image and
making it more lively than a standard still image.
- Final Result
Figure 5.1 "The Last" - JPEG
Figure 5.2 "The Last" - MP4
I tried to convey the feeling of emotional and powerful through this
project and video by using many dramatic colors such as red, orange, and
brown to elevate the dramatic sensation from this project. "The Last" is
a medium for me to express how even the strongest creature in the world
would suffer, cry, and become emotional as a result of this image.
This image is quite powerful; even my friend can interpret many stories
from emotionality to sadness from it. Even in the video, you can see a
variety of expressions and situations from various perspectives.
I also used a powerful song throughout the video to enhance the sense of
drama and movement in this YouTube video. The title song, also known as
"Lion," was produced and released by the Korean girl group G-IDLE. The
song itself is about someone as powerful as lion even if they are in a
pain.

FEEDBACK :
Week 11 - 14 :
- General Feedback :
Before completing our final project, we were able to provide our
facilitator with our work and sketches. Our lecturer (Dr Charles) also
responded and provided some of us with extremely important feedback to
help students improve their own work. Not only did he provide feedback,
but he also recommended some resources to assist us in completing this
project.
- Specific Feedback :
Dr. Charles taught me a valuable lesson about stepping outside of
your comfort zone. It will allow me to grow as a person without
limits. When you don't have any constraints, your imagination and
creativity can work even more effectively than before. After that, a lot of things happened; I ruined my work with my sloppy
perspective, but I tried to get up and refine my picture right away,
and Dr Charles seemed quite pleased with my latest work and
appreciated my efforts for this project.
REFLECTION :
- Experience :
This project was an emotional rollercoaster for me. There was a time
when I was at my peak and then fell to my lowest point in a split
second. It was unpredictable and emotionally draining, and I needed to
finish my other work. However, I was able to complete this project
successfully, and I am hopeful that I will be able to apply all of these
lectures and knowledge to my other work in the future. The lecturer was
also very helpful, and the class was excellent.
- Observation :
This project proved to be extremely beneficial to me. I've learned how
to use your image to tell your story to the audience. Even if they
haven't seen it before, your image can have an emotional impact on your
viewers. I also noticed that visual analysis is an important component
of design; we could improve the emotion in our image by applying this
method to it. I was overjoyed when Dr. Charles complimented my visual
analysis for this project; he boosted my confidence and assisted me in
completing this project. As I previously stated, doing visual analysis
will reveal many aspects and elements that will improve your art that
you were previously unaware of.
- Finding :
I've learned a lot from this project, including how we communicate our
work to viewers and audiences, as well as how simple things like visual
analysis can greatly improve your work. This project also assisted the
students in providing real evidence from their work as well as a great
method of teaching them by providing this visual analysis. We can see
that the majority of the students have improved as a result of this
project. Overall, I was pleased to attend this class and learn about
visual analysis, which has proven to be beneficial to me and my
work.
