LECTURES

Week 7 : 3 Acts - Structures

CENTRAL THEMES :

The theme is what the story is really about. It's the main idea or underlying meaning. Often, it's the story teller's personal opinion on the subject matter. A story may have both a major them and minor themes.

CONFLICT :

The conflict is what drives the story. It's what creates tension and builds suspense, which are the elements that make a story interesting. If there's no conflict not only the audience not care, but there also won't be any compelling story to tell. Conflict is what engages the audience. It's what keeps them white-knuckled, at the edge of their seats, waiting impatiently to see if the protagonist will overcome the obstacle.

CHARACTERS :

A story usually includes a number of characters, each with a different role or purpose. Regardless of how many characters a story has, however, there is almost always a protagonist and antagonist.
  • Central Characters : These characters are vital to the development pf the story. The plot revolves around them.
  • Protagonist : The protagonist is the main character pf a story. He or she has a clear goal to accomplish or a conflict to overcome. Although protagonist don't always need to be admirable, they must command an emotional involvement from the audience.
  • Antagonist : Antagonist oppose protagonist, standing between them and their ultimate goals. The antagonist can be presented in the form of any person, place, thing, or situation that represent a tremendous obstacle to the protagonist.

THREE ACTS STRUCTURE

  • Setup : The world in which the protagonist exists prior to the journey. The setup usually ends with he conflict being revealed.
  • Rising Tension : The series of obstacles the protagonist must overcome. Each obstacle is usually more difficult and with higher stakes than the previous one.
  • Conflict : The point of highest tension, and the major decisive turning point for the protagonist.
  • Resolution : The conflict's conclusion. This is where the protagonist finally overcomes the conflict, learns to accept it, or is ultimately defeated by it. Regardless, this is where the journey ends.

INSTRUCTION

PRACTICAL

Week 11 : Instruction

We are now being tasked to create one shot Web Toon short with the premise of a horror genre story of your own creation. Consider 3 - act structures but with interesting twist and plots. It can be wordless and presented only with illustration, or it can be detailed with stories, filled with speeches and texts.

Think of creating a premise for a story that makes your readers creeped out, scared, and of course you can end story on a happy note too! Use longline visuals to help establish your narrative.

Project Requirements :

  • Must be published at webtoons.com
  • Story must have 3 - acts structure
  • Create minimum 30 panels and maximum 50 panels
  • Illustrations (stickman drawing is not an illustration) can either be colored or greyscale or screen tone shaded render.
  • Content must be PG-13 and SAFE FOR WORK

Based on the webtoon you created in task 3, you are to animate the visuals according to sequences and flow the story. Consider timing and transition of the visuals that strongly reflect the narrative through characters, panels, particle effects, texts, etc.

Timing is important! too slow, your motion comic will be draggy and boring. Too quick, your animation won't make sense. So timed the flow appropriately.

Week 12 : Sketches and Story

Figure 1.1 - 1.4 Original Sketches

I tried to start my project with an extremely difficult story, but it was too frustrating and complex to become a good flow for my web comic. Ms. Anis approved my story, but I decided to simplify the plot, story, and narrative in order to make it more appealing to Ms. Anis.

Week 13 : New Sketches and Story

Figure 2.1 - 2.20 Refined and Improved Sketches

This comic's entire concept and story were changed by me. I also cut out some of the parts of my story that I thought were terrible and overly complicated, making it difficult for me to finish this project.

I also want to make the psycho character (the girl) stand out by using prominent styles such as hairstyles, dresses, ribbons, and faces to enhance the psychotic feel of this character. I also made the boy (protagonist character) cleaner and refined all of the previous style's elements.

Week 13 : Comic Result.

Figure 3.1 - 3.20 Final Result (JPEG)

To complete my first Web Comic, I had to create 20 different panels. It was difficult because we were asked to create our own illustration and comic using Adobe Illustrator, which has extremely difficult brushes to use. I also discovered that this application was slow to respond to my Apple Pencil and that erasing specific elements was extremely frustrating because it erased entire lines and elements.

However, I was able to complete this project using Adobe Illustrator and a style, concept, and story that was completely different from my previous sketches. Because of my own story, I found this to be extremely difficult, but it was far less difficult than my previous concept.

Week 14 : Animation and Motion Graphic

Figure 4.1 Animation Progress

To complete my animation submission, I decided to create my animation using Adobe After Effects as instructed. It was enjoyable because I was able to explore after effects in this class more thoroughly than in other classes because I spent the entire day creating and improving my animation using this program.

Working on this project made me extremely happy until I forgot about the video arrangements and video duration rules. The video should be between 1 and 3 minutes long, but I extended it to 5 minutes because I found this application to be incredibly captivating.

I created two different versions of my animation, one with audio and one without. This occurred because I wanted to give my audience a unique experience while listening to the various effects I selected from this animation.

FEEDBACK

Week 5 - 8

  • General Feedback :
    • Throughout these weeks, the majority of the students received extremely helpful feedback and suggestions from both Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer. To complete this project, we all gained valuable knowledge in the areas of animation and illustration.

  • Specific Feedback :
    • When I asked my lecturer for feedback on my work, he said it was fine and acceptable. Ms. Anis and Jennifer both praised my work, but they suggested that the main character and most important character in my story be improved and made more prominent to draw attention to the most important characters.

REFLECTIONS

  • Experience :
    • This project was extremely difficult for both myself and the other students. Due to a change in university arrangements that affected our project duration this semester, we were all given a very limited amount of time. Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer were both our heroes throughout the project because they assisted all of the students by granting us an extension to complete the project.
  • Observation :
    • It was frustrating for me to become a webtoon author because they required me to upload at least one chapter every week, and it had to be colored and published at specific times. We also learned how to create our own animation using our own webtoon, which was a fantastic and memorable experience for me because it allowed us to maximize our creativity, which is especially important for those considering an animation program.
  • Findings :
    • Making a comic was a very challenging experience for me. It necessitates a great deal of effort on the part of the author. We also need to explore and discover a variety of acceptable story lines in order to improve our narrative and comic, which was extremely difficult for me as someone who had never written a story before.
