LECTURES

Week 5 - Rhythm and Movement

  • Having rhythm or Movement in art is one of the most difficult thing or aspect to achieve/explain. Here are some example
    • Is it the story?
    • Is it the main subject?
    • Or is it the composition?

  • If we put it in different context, you can see that the good has good beat, so the good beat also has good rhythm on it

INSTRUCTION

PRACTICAL

Week 5 : Instruction.

Think of a moment in time that changed a narrative for the better or worst. Or a scene in a movie that turned the tide of the story. Or a particular part of a video game that made you rejoice or cry along with the character. Or a memorable chapter in your favorite book that made you return to read it again and again.

These are decisive moments that impacted a story and you as an audience. Whether the moments are based on real life events or fictional narratives, human psychology is easily affected by moments like these. As a designer, you are to capture these moments and translate them into a single place of animated artwork.

Here are some notes and reminders before take this project any further :

  • You can use any known narrative from published media like movies, animation, books, comics, manga etc.
  • Capture the unique, fleeting, and meaningful moment of that time. Ideally involving movement and action.
  • Create a sophisticated background to the subject that interacts synergistically meaningful figure/ground relationship.
  • Exercise anticipation, ambiguity and uncertainty of the moment as a visual gap, interval, or suspension of some kind through animation loop.
  • Provide a longline to describe the moments, but not enough to reveal the whole story behind the picture.

Here are some arrangements and rules for the minimalist poster and the animated GIF from the lecturer :

  • Documentation of artwork progress. Remember, extra marks for experimentations
  • Final animated * .gif loop in either landscape or portrait (800 x 600) using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

Week 6 : Visual Research

At the beginning of this project, I struggled to figure out a suitable narrative to construct my first minimalist poster. I've tried to dive the internet browser as well as YouTube to assist me observe a promising movies and animations. However, I managed to find and noted one animation called Assassination Classroom from my own previous artwork.

This animation or anime is basically a science fiction Japanese tv show that was insanely popular and well known in Japan. I remembered crying for the whole week after finishing this animation. I decided to determine and execute this particular scene in order to finish this exercise.

Chosen Movie : Assassination Classroom

  • Movie : Assassination Classroom
  • Decisive Moment :
The chosen scene which is the decisive moment that I determined, are taken from the episode 24 (second season). This is the peak point from this anime when the main figure shown to death and altered the whole story from this narrative.
  • Further Details :
Ansatsu Kyoshitsu or well known as Assassination Classroom is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Yusei Matsui that has appeared in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from July 2012 to march 2016.

  • Chosen Scene :

These part were my original scene that I chose to be my minimalist poster, unfortunately, I found this part was quite blank and wasn't enough to be presented to the audience. So I turned the table right away and found another simple scene yet incredibly impactful for a minimalist poster.

As mentioned before, I decided to change all my plane and settled on these part of the anime. I found these reference would affect and impact the audience emotionally and a very suitable moment to be animated for this project.

Week 7 : Sketch and Idea Exploration

  • Sketches :

Figure 2.7 Sketches Layout #1 and #2 (21/10/22)

Figure 2.8 Sketches layout #3 and #4 (21/10/21)

I've made several different preliminary drawings before finalize it through Adobe Illustrator along with Adobe Photoshop to create the animation. I utilized its composition to discover the best arrangement for the future poster and animation gif.

Ms Anis as well as Ms Jenifer praised  the colors combination that I played for the original sketches. They both suggested me to carry on with digitalizing the chosen composition (fig x.x) with the same colors and cheer me up to animate all of the yellow orbs.

  • Progression (Before Feedback) :

Figure 2.9 First Color Scheme (20/10/21)

At first, I decided to choose and change the color concept from what my lecturers recommended to me. I instantaneously modified and changed the first attempt to be blue and red colors instead of presenting this monochrome.

On some occasion, I had a chance to request a quick feedback and response from Ms Anis (My Facilitator), I asked her whether the orbs look disturbing or not, and she immediately retorted the question of mine that the orbs looked fine and I'm welcome to go with this arrangement.

Here are some of my progressions using Adobe Illustrator. I'm using the principle of foreground to create contrast between few objects from this poster. Furthermore, I appended several elements for instance the "Assassination Classroom" Typefaces along with additional lighting for the current poster.

I also ran Adobe Photoshop to create the animation GIF using the timeline window. It took me quite long to create the animation owing to the fact that I construct more than 40 frame to utilize the animated poster.

Figure 2.14 Final Result Before Feedback (21/10/21)

Here are my previous final result for the minimalist poster as well as the animated GIF poster. I received a few valuable responses from the facilitator related to my poster and several recommendation to improve my current works.

Notes and Responses from the facilitator :

- The moving poster looked nice and run smoothly in view of fact that I used more than 40 frames for the animation.

- The typefaces and the titles can be improved.

- The orbs can be more irregular and unidentical towards each other (the movement and size)

- Otherwise, it's actually nice (good job man!)

- The log line should've not being forgotten.

  • Progression (After Feedback)

Figure 2.15 Final Poster after Feedback (21/10/21)

As suggested by the instructor, I changes several elements from both minimalist and animated poster. to begin with, I changed the typefaces by using the official typeface from the assassination classroom animation. The log line also supplemented into the poster but not enough to summarize the whole story (as mentioned on the instruction)

I also tried to improve the animation poster by adding a bunch of new frames to increase the duration of the GIF design. I increased the number of frames from 45 to 88 including new ideas to change the camera perspective at the end of the GIF poster.

I also happened to produce additional scene to increase the duration of my animated poster. Logline are also added to the frame as Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer told me.

FEEDBACK

Week 5 - 8

  • General Feedback :
    • Despite the fact that all students experienced several independent learning week, both the lecturer (Ms Anis and Ms Jenifer) were managed to give us denotative responses and feedbacks for the freshman to complement their project.

  • Specific Feedback :
    • notwithstanding that my work looked nice and acceptable, nonetheless, there are many parts that can be improved in order to attain the highest score for this project, for instance the typefaces that I was used, the motion graphic from the animation poster, as well as to augment the log line.

REFLECTIONS

  • Experience :
    • Throughout this project from week 5 to week 6. We've learned many crucial things to be a great designer, especially for those who intends to enter animation major similar with me. The class was great and the lecturer were very friendly and helped us a lot to utilize our work. Big thanks to Ms Jenifer to help me convert and export my poster while I'm struggling with my device along with Ms Anis for all the comments and responses that I have received.

  • Observation :
    • I observed that Adobe Photoshop isn't always about photo. With our creativity and imagination we could produce a motion graphic (although it's quite inefficient and complex). We also comprehended that it is possible to approach audience through a minimalist poster.

  • Findings :
    • I found many aspects including theoretical and practical about minimalist poster and how to approach audience within a very limited elements in one picture or poster. We
