Week 2 : Vormator Challenge & Intoduction to Character Design
Vormator Challenge
Ms. Anis challenged us to create/sketch our own design characters with very
limited shapes (vormator challenge) for our very first task this semester.
She also gave us super quick and valuable feedback to ensure that every
student would thrive from it.
Today we learned about character design, it is a very basic element yet
important to attract people interest.
Introduction to Character Design
- Styling designs so it stands out the most
- Iconic
- Easily Created
- Profitable
- What makes it unique ?
- Is it adorable ?
- Is it reference ?
- Principle of character design is important
- Shapes :
- It defines a character’s sillhoute
- This sets is iconic look.
- Stability in shapes makes design more solid.
- Colors
- It is an important/major role at determining who are heroes/protagonist or villains (the main character or the secondary characters)
- It gives an impression on character, also can cause certain emotions in people
- Color psychology.
- Harmony
- All shapes and lines colors moives patterns must be put together in a tasteful manner
- They must complement each other so it creates a balance of visual elements that has a visual hierarchy
- Expressions/Poses
- It makes your characters win the heart of the audience for instance (behavior, quirks and personalities)
Week 3 : Composition
- Utilize composition for your design
- Visual Hierarchy :
- It helps or allows your viewers to focus on the important things or objects.
- Establishing : A composition with a very wide shot.
Figure 1.5 Establishing
- Bird's eye view : The shoot that is taken from the sky and looking down to the important objects or things, it is also dynamic and movement than establishing, it is also gives us the sense of height and movement.
Figure 1.6 Bird's eye view
- Worm's eye view : different from bird's eye view, this composition taken from a very low angle, it is also more intimate than bird's eye view.
Figure 1.7 Worm's eye view
- Close up shot : it is a shot that is taken from a very close position from the important objects, this is when the object becomes the most important thing and takes all the viewer's eye
Figure 1.8 Close up shot
- Medium Shot : this is the shot that is taken behind or between or in the middle of 2 different objects or person. This kind of shot gives us the sensation to be another person in a certain scene.
Figure 1.9 Medium Shot
- Framing : This a shot where several object frames the composition, it is also gives a romantic feels to the scene.
Figure 2.0 Framing
Week 4 : Composition and Perspectives
Perspectives is undoubtedly very important for layout/environment, without perspectives, your design will look a little bit dorky.
For example, this picture looks beautiful isn't it? but however it lacks of perspectives in it, so no matter how rich or beautiful your picture is, it will ended up become dorky without any perspectives.
Figure 2.2 The art of byzantine
That's all happened until a maverick came along, this picture which is the first known picture to make use of linear perspective made by the Florentine architect Filipo brunelleshi.
This picture contained :
- Form
- Volume
- Buildings raced into the design
This pictures also used the light and shadow, here are some examples :
Figure 2.3 Masaccio - The tribute money
Figure 2.4 The last supper - davinci
This picture used the theory of 3 planes which is contained
- Foreground
- Middleground
- background
Figure 2.5 The picture using 3 planes theory
In this pictures, we can see the manipulation of space and depth, it also use the trick of manipulation in here that makes viewers wonder about the story behind this picture.
Figure 2.6 Las Meninas
What is perspective in art ? here are the answers :
- it is to create depth, to create sense of space into the painting
- it is also to create optical illusion (illusion)
- it is also gives representation of objects (both 2d and 3d)
Figure 2.7 Types of perspectives
- 1 Point Perspectives : all the line intersects on one point
Figure 2.8 1 point perspective
- 2 Point perspective : two lines that is connected and created 1 horizontal lines
In this picture we can see 3 different layers who also divided several elements in this picture, it is also depict depth even though without actually putting perspective

INSTRUCTION
PRACTICAL
Week 1 : Vormator Challenge
On this task, Ms. Anis assigned us to ceate a character using very
limited shapes (vormator) and digitalize by Adobe Illustrator. I
tried to make my characters using ibis paint but somehow it is ended up
being full-color pictures. Ms anis and Ms. Jennifer also suggest me
develop the first picture and re-create it using Adobe Illustrator.
This is how I made my characters using Ibis Paint, I had no idea that we should create it using adobe illustrator, so I decided to change it later and started sketching also coloring using the application that I often used on my iPad.
Video 1.1 Progression
This is the final result of sketching, I ended up made a cute little owl. there are some mistakes that I made while making this character so I decided to create another one in case they will reject my first sketch.
Figure 1.5 Muhammad (named by Ms. Anis)
This is the second character that I made, I made it less complex than the first one to minimize the chance for me to create another mistakes, but somehow it is ended up being too simple and this is also the one who get rejected by my lecturer.
I also had a chance to documented on how I made this character in a short video, the only problem here is that this character lack of shape, I only uses 3 different shapes for this character and it looks very basic compared to my other friends.
Our lecturer (Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer) assigned us to transform our
sketches/design into Adobe Illustrator form. I tried to learn and use
several tools from ai to develop my characters. I decided to choose few shapes from the given shapes.
Figure 2.0 Progression (02/09/21)
This is (fig 2.X) how my character looks like without any colors, I only chose several elements from the given objects to create my character
Figure 2.0 Original Characters
Here is Mamad, my original character for this Vormator challenge, he's a great cook and loves to create many kind of desert.
Figure 2.1 Original Character (Final Result)
Mamad is actually a very clumsy owl with a bright personality. He didn't afraid to be failed and trust the process, he likes to cook and always wanted to become a great chef one day. Kitchen has always been his second home, stove and pan never been forgotten. His motto is "everyday is a new journey and recipe" and sure, he wrote everything he knows on his recipe.
He obsessed with cupcake, he always made something related to cupcakes everyday such as durian cupcake, rambutan cupcake, cabai cupcake, or even jengkol cupcake. He always wanted to open his own kitchen and name it as "Mamad's Cupcake". People always ignored whenever mamad offering his cupcake to everyone. Everyone knew that mamad's cupcake taste awful and that's why mamad has a very few people surrounds him.
Even though he always badly criticised by people around him, he will never stop to cook. He promised to his best friend Lucas (passed away) that he'll become a very successful chef eventually.
FINAL RESULT :
Week 3 : Card Game Design
For this week, Ms Jennifer as well as Ms Anis assigned us to develop
our characters and try to create a card game using our own characters.
Students are challenged to evolve their ideas by using adobe illustrator
to create their own card game design.
Figure 2.0 Card Sketch (13/09/21)
This is how I sketched my card, I didn't do anything that much on my card because I only wanted to determine of the composition that I will choose,
Figure 2.1 Design Prototype (13/09/21)
At this moment, I started to create several elements that I
think look suitable for Mamad (my character). As you can see
here, I made variety objects with different colors to play around
with the color composition and explore my self by using various tools
that is provided from Adobe.
Figure 2.3 Background Elements (13/09/21)
Here is my first attempt creating my card game design, it looks
quite good actually, but I was quite struggling to improve the
back side of the card and lacking of several components at that
moment (font and text)

Figure 2.4 First Attempt (13/09/21)
and here is the final result, I'm super satisfied with my
final composition, I asked Ms Anis for several times
cause I was unsure with my result, but she told me that my card
was already good. I changed a few component to refine the back side
of my card and replaced it with the same objects and word.

REFLECTIONS
Experience : The class was great, Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer did a
very good job to teach us about our lessons for this semester. They’re
very friendly and it makes us (student) seemed very comfortable with the
class. The tutorial is also very clear and understandable for te
students. For the second week we experienced a great week to create Vormator with Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer. Ms Jennifer taught us how to use adobe illustrator and it seemed all the students understood with a very clear tutorial from Ms Jennifer. I also understand even deeper now about character design and composition. Our lecturer lately also gave us some information about the perspectives to all the students.
Observation : I observed that appealing and iconic character is very important for
illustration. Expressions, as well as colors, are very crucial elements to
attract people and certain markets. Character design also an important things in order to create captivating character. not only the design, we also observed several things such as composition and framing, perspective also a crucial things to create a great design.
Findings : I have discovered that IVN isn't just some illustration, we learned so much things from this class, I understand several things that could improve my design such as character design with a lot of things on it, as well as composition and perspectives. it was a very interesting class and task, we could worked together with all the students as well as our professional lecturer.
